Runners
Are you serious about your running? Do you participate in the 5K, 10K, marathons, or triathlons? You may have just found a great, new, functional training tool to help you set that PR.
Runners are being exposed to and educated on sport-specific training. High quality, shorter workouts, strength training, running plyometrics, and neuromuscular adaptation have been shown to generate very positive results for runners.
The interplay of strength training and distance running is getting very favorable reviews. Improving muscle power is "runner positive", but you don't want increased body weight caused by traditional weightlifting programs. Research (and the feedback of our users) indicates that strength training for endurance will be effective if it allows the actual running movements to be performed or mimicked.
One study, Rusko & Bosco (European Journal of Applied Physiology 56: 412-418, 1987) had trained distance runners carry out their normal workouts with weighted vests. In addition, they wore the vests during daily activities. Another group, minus vests, followed their normal training schedule. After 6 weeks, the vested athletes had improved their VO2 max 2%(oxygen efficiency) and lactate threshold 2%(being higher it meant they produced lower levels of lactic acid). Also, their sprinting endurance shot up by 25% and leg-muscle power rose 3%. The control group without vests showed no changes in these measurements.
| Dr Owen Anderson, Ph.D.,editor of Running Research News and author of "Lactate Lift-Off": "Using the SmartVest will increase your endurance, leg strength, and overall speed. Additionally, the SmartVest can increase lactate threshold enough to improve your 10K time by a minute. Studies show that a weighted vest, such as the SmartVest, can help you to run 25% longer at high quality pace. All in as little as 6 weeks." |
Application opportunities:
*hill repeats/workouts *track sessions *speed work *biking *hiking *treadmill intervals *pushups/situps/dips/pullups *plyometrics, and *daily activity wear
| Fernando Cruz, Triathlete, 28th finish in Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon: "My training with the SmartVest has been extraordinary. The progress that I've seen has been quite unbelievable. I've incorporated usage of the vest twice a week both on my long runs and my speed workouts. These workouts have translated into tremendous time drops in my races."
