Police work can be arduous and physically demanding. Your fitness is paramount. If your testing for the academy, the SmartVest will be a great tool for your preparation. If you’ve been on the beat for a few years, this is a method of staying “fitness ready”.


The testing procedures for departments may vary, but they all emphasize strength, endurance, and flexibility. It could be 1.5 mile run, # of sit-ups in 90 seconds, maximum push-ups, or even a vertical jump test. You need good
aerobic capacity, upper body strength, and strong legs.

Adding additional on-body resistance will intensify your workouts and make them more productive. You will be resistance and aerobic training, simultaneously. Wear your vest when jogging. Playing basketball. On the stairmaster. Combative training. Or just taking care of daily business. Think about it. You’ll be training your body for actual police work, by simulating the weight and feel of the bullet-proof vest (5-8lbs).

A quick note concerning martial arts and combative training. The SmartVest is designed for all methods of movement. Load your workouts with the vest, and then remove it and continue your training. This contrast training, loading and unloading, is a great way to add strength and quickness to the move. It will not impede your technique or slow your reaction time. But wait till you feel what happens when you go vest-free. In sports, they call it explosiveness.

The adjustable weight load of the SmartVest allows you to progressively enhance your fitness and strength levels. Start with 4 lbs and increment by 2 pounds as you become stronger. Wear your weighted vest during exercise and daily activities. The snug, comfortable fit lets you move at top speed and won’t be a distraction for hours of daily wear. Many users say they forget their wearing their vest. There’s no shoulder stress, the thin weights conform to your body, and the compression calms the upper body.

Football players do the exact same thing, in that they are simulating the full-pad playing environment of 10-12 lbs. When training camp begins, they won’t have to adapt to the extra load of the practice gear. Very effective and practical.

The vest is packaged with 12 one pound weights. You can purchase additional sets of 4 one pound weights as needed. Consider your current fitness level.
