Women's Model: Actual waist size - 29" or less 20 lbs Actual waist size - 30" or more 24 lbs Men's Model: Actual waist size 30" or less - 20 lbs Actual waist size - 31 to 33" - 24 lbs Actual waist size - 34" or more - 32 lbs The SmartVest is a custom-fitting vest that requires models and sizing for both men and women. Accomplishing this un-comparable fit requires very specific resistance configurations. When you correlate waist size to body weight, the correct vest size for that body type carries more then a sufficient load capacity for nearly all applications. Your SmartVest has complete adjustability - 2 lbs to your vest's maximum load. Your SmartShorts carry a maximum load of 16 one-half pound weight sharing modules. A total of 8lbs. Each with its own security pocket. Eight pockets on each leg. Remember: the weights can be bowed/molded to conform to the shape of your thigh. Your shorts (mens & womens) come packaged with the full complement of weights. Your SmartShorts have complete adjustability - 1 lb. to 8 lbs. Recommendations: General : a maximum of 10% of body weight, and if you are very smart, 10% of your lean body mass. The activities should be non-impact (walking, daily wear, hiking, biking, stairmaster, in-line, re-hab, vocational) or very short, high-intensity bursts of 1 to 3 minutes (speed rope, plyometrics, sport-specific speed workouts 100's,200's,hill repeats, gassers ,..if you have a doubt or question concerning load amount, PLEASE send us an e-mail. Distance runners should start with no more then 2% of body weight. Basketball player's guidelines suggest starting with 4 lbs, and certainly no more then six. Their sport is high impact. If it's an aerobics class, use the same considerations. If your activity is considered high impact, use common sense. Try what you think is a small amount of weight, and see how it goes. Note: The NFL teams that use the SmartVest start their players with 4 lbs during the initial training phases. Four pounds, yes, 4 lbs, when utilized at top speed actually feels like 16 to 20 lbs of FORCE, with each foot strike. The distance covered and the time spent moving, delivers a tremendous amount of accumulated, application force. That build-up produces results. Take a peek at the power (force) equation in the marital arts application. Gradually, progress to a functional max load of 5-7% of body weight, for high-impact activities. A 180-lb body weight = 9 to 12 lbs of max vest load. Remember, you certainly can carry more load during daily-wear time periods. But, that is low-impact. A strong, fit walker might start at 4-5% of body weight. Your main goal is exercise, not speed. A race walker will only use 6 pounds. They are keying on stride frequency and technique. If you're a power walker, you'll be very pleased with 6-8 lbs in your SVest. The power ambler is focused on high "effort return" for time invested. These are recommendations and guidelines based on 10 years of customer interaction and feedback. Some of you will "push the metal to the pedal", but, please, always listen to your body.
